SOUNDSCAPE GRAVE NEW WORLD Self-Printable Lyric Booklet and Jewel Box Traycard Instructions Introduction Soundscape's Grave New World, recorded in 1998, has been remixed and remastered, and is now available in digital form from iTunes and in physical form from two online retailers. Since the album is self-produced and self-distributed, the original 12-page lyric booklet was unable to be included with the packaging of the CD. In order to give listeners the chance to see the originally-intended artwork as well as the lyrics, the booklet has been produced in a format for downloading that can then be printed at home. The production of the booklet was not designed and never intended for home printing, so please keep in mind that your results will depend on the quality of your printer, ink and paper, and that back-to-back printing on a home printer is a hit-or-miss process that requires some trial-by-error to get the fronts and backs of the pages to line up. It’s unlikely that a home printer will be able to get it exactly right. Please make sure to set aside plenty of time to do this, a few hours perhaps, so that you don’t get frustrated when it doesn’t work right the first time. 1. You will need Adobe Reader, available online at http://get.adobe.com/reader. 2. Download the two files at GNW.RedRunnerST.com, named GNWoddpages.pdf and GNWevenpages.pdf. 3. Open the GNWoddpages PDF file in Adobe Reader first. There are four pages in the document- three pages of what are called 'printer spreads' for the lyric booklet and one page of the traycard interior. When you look at the printer spreads, it will appear that they are out of order- page 12 is next to page 1, followed by page 10 next to page 3 and page 8 next to page 5. This is how the pages have to be arranged in order for the back-to-back printing to work and have the pages come out in the correct order when the booklet is folded. 4. Make sure that your printer settings are set for landscape printing. The pages are wider than they are tall, of course, so regular portrait printing will cause them to run off the edge. 5. Load blank paper in your printer, taking special care to make sure that the each sheet will go into the printer in as close to the same position as possible. If you’re using a laser printer, this will probably not be an issue as the printer is taking paper from a tray. If you’re using an inkjet printer, which most people will, your printer probably has a sliding plastic guide in the loading slot that allows you to use different paper sizes. Make sure this guide is slid all the way over so that the slot is only just wide enough for the paper you’re using, leaving no gaps. This is important for aligning the pages so that the back-to-back printing will line up as closely as possible. 6. Print the GNWoddpages PDF, but take special attention to how the blank sheets are going into your printer, and how the printed pages are oriented when they come out. You will need to take these printed pages and put them back in your printer, flipped over and possibly rotated so that when you print the second document, they will be printed on the back of the first set of pages, and still oriented right side up. You may want to try a trial run by putting your printer on draft setting so as not to waste ink, or you could draw a tiny arrow in the corner of the first sheet to show how it goes into the printer, and then see how the arrow is oriented when it comes out to help you figure it out. You may also need to reorder the sheet that came out so that the first sheet going in for the second printing is the one with the front and back covers on it (which should have been the first sheet to come out on the first printing). 7. When you're ready to try printing the backs of the pages, open the GNWevenpages PDF. Make sure your first set of printed pages are loaded and print the second document. Hopefully, when the pages come out, they will be oriented correctly, so that flipping each sheet over left-to-right still shows each side reading right-side-up. 8. You will notice that each sheet has thin marks on each corner of the booklet pages. They show the lines along which you will need to trim each sheet, since the printing is larger than the booklet is meant to be when cut to the size of a CD jewel box. This is what is called a 'bleed', so that the artwork will go all the way to the edge of the page. The two marks at the center of each page indicate the line along which you will fold the page. Note that even though both sides of each sheet has marks, there is no way these marks will exactly line up with the same marks on the opposite side. The idea is that hopefully your results will be very close. 9. Choose the marks on the odd-side pages (the front-and-back covers, pages 3 and 10, and pages ) and use them to trim the pages from each sheet. It makes it much easier to use a cutting board than scissors, but be very careful when using any kind of blade. When you finish trimming each sheet, check the other side to see how far off it is from being centered correctly. Hopefully you will see plenty of the 'metal' and 'circuit board' artwork around the edges, and no actual photos or text cut off. 10. The last sheet, the traycard, has marks near the left and right edges where you will fold the thin flaps up on each side to form the spine of the CD jewel box. When you open an empty jewel box, this sheet will fit in the clear tray that goes behind the spindle that holds the disc. This will be the trickiest page to cut and fold in order to get it to fit right in the tray, behind the CD spindle. You will want to make these folds before you trim the tray card, because once you trim it you will have cut off the fold marks. It helps to use a ruler or some other straight-edge to help you make the fold with a clean crease. 11. Back to the booklet: when you have all the sheets trimmed, stack them up so that the odd pages face up. This will have the back and front covers (left to right) on the top. Next under that will be the page with 'Zombie Nation' and 'Resurrection' on the left and the credits on the right, facing up. The last sheet under that will have 'Big Brother'/'Age of Wonder' on the left and 'Digital Lover' on the right, facing up. If you flipped the whole stack over, you would have the 'Man and Machine' lyrics spreading left-to-right on both sides. 12. Now to make the fold. It would be best to fold the entire booklet in half together, using the line between the front and back covers as a guide for where the crease should be. Alternatively you could try folding each sheet individually, by lining up the corners with each other so as to fold each sheet exactly in half. Either way, when you put the pages of the booklet together, the interior pages will stick out very very slightly from inside the covers. This is the way it is, to have the pages trimmed cleanly to line up with each other requires a professional print job. 13. Assuming the pages aren't badly misaligned, meaning you'll have to make a second attempt at printing the pages, your booklet is now complete, but it isn't bound. If you have a large or long-arm stapler, it could reach across to the middle of the pages so you could staple your own booklet. Alternatively you could have a print shop 'saddle stitch' it for you (which is still stapling), but they may give you a funny look when you hand it to them, because they don't know how to charge for such a small job. This is when it would be better to visit a small local shop instead of a chain like FedEx Kinko's, they might just do it for free if they aren't busy. 14. Now all you have to do is assemble the traycard and jewel box, slide in the booklet, and put the CD from the wallet package that you bought onto the jewel box's spindle.
